Isabel and Clara are growing up in a time of terror. It is 1492, and Spain has decreed that all Jews must either convert to Catholicism, go into exile or face trial and execution. Although forcibly baptized, the sisters are chased through Christendom until they arrive in Venice. It is in this great maritime empire, where opulence rhymes with tolerance, that Isabel organizes secret passages for refugees fleeing the Inquisition while Clara falls in love with a Venetian noble, Paolo Zane. Isabel intends for her family to go to Istanbul, the only place where Jews can live freely, but Clara is reluctant to leave. She challenges Isabel's authority and is prepared to break her family ties and sacrifice her faith for love. Caught in this battle of wills is Clara's daughter, Victoria, who finds she is about to be married into the same faith that murdered her father.

I recently saw this Secret Passage on TV in Greece. (Dec. 06) As he had never heard of it before it was a real surprise. Great costumes, sets and color. The story along kept in motion and has had to pay attention. I felt at the end I wanted more. What happened next? Is there a sequel? Is it a series? The scenes in Venice were astonishing in their recreation of the era. Most of these players I've never heard of and I gather that this is a mostly European cast. The credits run as fast (on my TV) that he could not catch what nationality shall co-production. Czecoslovakian? The historical aspects are very interesting and Echoes of Shakespeare "The Merchant of Venice" in the way the Venictian to apply their trade laws and the laws of contract. Very interesting. And it beautifully filmed.

I know from the works of the former Bosnian director Kenovic (Kuduz and The Perfect Circle), I had high expectations for "Secret Passage". Well, I can say that he was not disappointed, on the contrary, this Secret Passage film is really well done, from the manuscript, Secret Passage movie to the action. I was stunned by Katherine Borowitz it Isabel plays, but also by Hannah Taylor-Gordon, who plays Victoria. These two actresses are wonderful expression that adds an extra value to this very good movie. I'm glad John Turturro found its place in the movie, because I think it is a great player with great potential, which could and should be used in projects not of their usual roles. But even though they did good job, I think it was somewhat out of place in the movie, but I'm not sure ... perhaps because I am used to seeing him in more contemporary films. I loved the story. It shows how Jews were treated in Christian Europe, where witch hunts and the Inquisition were almost the national sports. Kenovic has a great eye for detail and aesthetics. The scenes are well established, and have enjoyed every moment on the outskirts of Venice. I can warmly recommend this movie: Secret Passage to anyone who is interested in history and beautifully shot movies. It bothers me that Ademir Kenovic does not direct the movies more often (mostly farmers), because he is very talented director. 8 out of 10.

I had never heard of Ademir Kenovic before this movie, but was surprised by his skills. It is possible to pause at this FIM in hundreds of places to see a masterpiece painting in the design, composition and landscape. The list of claims of a battalion of those involved in the scenery, costumes and technical support necessary for such a costume drama and it is not surprising. My main criticism is that, perhaps for reasons of vanity actors, often the characters do not use hats or headdresses, as they could have done in the 15th century and also often appeared casually dressed in what would have been a very formal. The story is sufficiently complex to maintain attention without being too convoluted, which is essentially concerned with the fundamentals of human relationships and fate. The dialogue is strong and all the actors did a good job. Remember the historic drama of the BBC at its best, with the added advantage of this talented director Bosnian.
